Open Educational Resource Textbooks

"They have higher grades, they don't drop out of the classes, they take more courses because they have access to a free textbook and they have immediate access to that textbook on the first day."      - Nicole Finkbeiner, OpenStax

The cost of textbooks has increased significantly within the past decade. Open educational resource textbooks help make college education more affordable by offering textbooks for free or at a reduced cost. OpenStax, Open SUNY Textbooks, and Open Textbook Library offer their quality peer-reviewed textbooks at no cost.

OpenStax

In 2012, Rice University created OpenStax. Their textbooks are peer-reviewed and are free to adopt. Many of their textbooks cover general courses at the undergraduate level. They have also created OpenStax CNX which provides small modules of information to help support the texts and courses.

Key Resource: OpenStax All of our textbooks are peer-reviewed and absolutely free. They meet standard scope and sequence requirements and come in web view, PDF, on iBooks, or a low cost print version.

Open SUNY Textbooks

In response to the growing impact of Open Educational Resources (OER) adoption across SUNY, the Open SUNY Textbook (OST) project is offering services to support wide faculty adoption of OER that can be effectively sustained, improved and shared, as well as delivered to students to give them the day-one access to course materials they need for academic success.

Key Resource:  Open SUNY TextbooksThe mission of Open SUNY Textbooks is to provide an academic-friendly publishing model and infrastructure which supports faculty adoption, remixing, and creation of open educational resources (OER) and courses.
